Government data also shows that prices are falling as internet and smartphone use increases
Ottawa, ON, January 19, 2023 /CNW/ – Last year, 95% of Canadian adults reported using the Internet on a computer or smartphone. December 2022 By Pew Research Center. Canadian internet and smartphone users are also consuming more data than ever before, while prices for such services have fallen despite higher overall inflation, according to government data.

As in other countries surveyed, smartphone ownership rates among Canadians age 50 or older are lower than younger age groups, with 72% of those over 50 reporting smartphone ownership. This difference in smartphone ownership between age groups is an indication that there are factors other than cost influencing smartphone adoption, such as the level of digital literacy or lack of interest.
The latest data from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) and Statistics Canada (StatCan) shows not only that the number of Canadians using the Internet and owning smartphones is increasing, but also the individual subscriber’s Internet and mobile data consumption and the rate at which such services are used. , and the prices of internet and mobile wireless services have increased dramatically.

Meanwhile, according to the CRTC, the average Canadian residential internet subscriber downloaded almost 324% more data in 2022 than in 2015, with average monthly data downloaded up from 93.1 GB per month in 2015. It has increased to 394.4 GB. in the 3rd quarter of 2022.
In addition to consuming more data, Canadians are benefiting from faster internet services, with the average download speed Canadians subscribe to increasing nearly tenfold from 28.5 Mbps in 2015 to 258.8 Mbps in 2021. The average download speed increased from 5.4 Mbps to 106.4 Mbps. during the same period.
Mobile wireless subscribers are also getting more value for their dollar. StatCan’s Mobile Services Price Index fell 32% December 2018 for December 2022at the same time, the consumer price index for all items increased by 15% in the same period.2

Like residential internet subscribers, Canadian mobile phone subscribers continue to increase their mobile data usage. The CRTC reports that mobile phone users consumed an average of 6.07 GB of data traffic per month in Q3 2022. This is almost three times the amount of data consumed 4 years ago.
