Bertucci files for bankruptcy again, closing more Massachusetts, New Hampshire locations
Bertucci’s, a longtime Italian-themed restaurant that started in Massachusetts in the early 1980s, has filed for bankruptcy for a second time and has closed several Massachusetts and New Hampshire locations. The closings come as the restaurant chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in federal court on Monday. In the filing, the chain’s parent company, Bertucci’s Restaurants, LLC, cited the impact of COVID-19 and inflation, both of which have led to lower sales and higher costs. In fiscal 2021, the chain posted an operating loss of $14 million and a net loss of $7.2 million. The company confirmed to WCVB on Wednesday that it is closing restaurants in Beverly, Brockton, Canton, Marlborough and North Attleborough. Bertucci’s restaurants in Manchester and Salem, New Hampshire, have also closed. In Nashua, New Hampshire, the restaurant was the only one open in the state. Bertucci’s first kitchen opened in 1981 in Somerville’s Davis Square neighborhood. Bertucci previously filed for bankruptcy in April 2018. Bertucci’s Restaurants, LLC was the subject of bankruptcy and sale of restaurants and is located in Orlando, Florida. Bertucci’s still has 31 restaurants in the country, including 20 in Massachusetts, one in New Hampshire and Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Virginia, according to the company’s website. The company managed 47 restaurants. After filing for bankruptcy in 2018, the documents say. Bertucci’s employs approximately 1,436 hourly and salaried employees, according to the bankruptcy filing. A spokeswoman for the restaurant said that where possible, Bertucci’s employees have been offered relocation. The petition estimated that Bertucci was worth between $10 million and $50 million. No commitment noted.
