P&O Cruises does not include wifi, so if you want to use the internet while at sea you will need to pay for wifi.
In this guide, I’ll show you all the P&O Cruises internet packages and how to buy them so you can access the internet during your cruise without spending more than you need.
Do you need Wi-Fi on a cruise?
Before you buy a Wi-Fi package, let’s consider whether you really need…
Can you use mobile data?
When the ship is docked, you’ll usually be able to access 3G, 4G or 5G data. Even since Brexit, many mobile phone providers allow you to use your standard data allowance in Europe at no extra cost.
Outside of Europe, you’ll likely have to pay for data on your phone. But it’s not always cost-effective, so make sure you’re connected to your mobile network before you go.
You can also use mobile data while at sea, but I definitely would no recommend. After the ship leaves the port, your phone will be connected to the sea network, which will cost you a lot.
You can find out how much offshore data roaming costs and why here: How to Avoid Roaming Charges on a Cruise.
Can you switch off on sea days?
If you don’t have a family member or urgent business to worry about back home, you might want to consider turning off your phone while your ship is at sea.
Most cruises have no more than two sea days in a row, and it can be great to spend time connecting with the people you’re with without looking at your phone.
If there is an emergency at home, your family members will be able to contact the ship and send a message.
You can still use the My Vacation planner
During your cruise, you can use P&O Cruises’ Holiday Planner to view your onboard account, make dining and theater reservations, join virtual queues and book shore excursions.
My Holiday planner is a website, not an app. But you won’t need a wifi package to access it, as you can do so using P&O Cruises’ limited free wifi. Simply connect to “P&OCruises_Guest_WIFI” and then use your browser to access myholiday.pocruises.com.
P&O Cruises Wi-Fi Packages
If you’ve decided to have internet access on your P&O Cruise, here’s how you can arrange…
P&O Cruises offers three different wifi packages, plus a ‘Pay Per Minute’ option:
1. My Wifi Essential
Price: £18 for 24 hours (or £12 per day for the whole cruise)
P&O Cruises’ My Wifi Essential is for social media and messaging only. So you can check your Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and also send messages through Whatsapp.
With this package, you won’t be able to check your emails or surf the web for information. Snap Chat is also prohibited.
2. My Wifi Ultimate
Price: £24 for 24 hours (or £18 per day for the whole cruise)
My Wifi Ultimate lets you browse the web, send and receive email, use social media and Whatsapp.
According to P&O Cruises, the only thing you can’t do is stream videos and music from sites like YouTube and Spotify, and you can upload your videos to social media. In theory, you should have 3X faster connection speed.
However, on my most recent trip on Arvia, I used the Ultimate wifi package and it didn’t allow me to upload videos to social media, so I couldn’t update my Instagram stories.
The wifi didn’t work at all on Christmas Day (I expect it was due to the increased number of guests wanting to use it). Other days it was so slow as to be unusable.
If you need to check emails and send messages, you’ll be fine. But if you intend to do a lot, I wouldn’t trust P&O Cruises wifi, no matter what package you buy.
That said, if you’re not happy with it, you can just go to guest services and they’ll refund your purchase.
When to buy P&O Wifi: before or during the cruise?
If you intend to purchase a P&O Cruises wifi package for your entire cruise, then you can purchase it before your cruise or once on board. 24-hour plans can only be purchased onboard.
Purchase Wi-Fi before your cruise
You must log into the P&O Cruises Planner to purchase a wifi package prior to your cruise. Alternatively, you can call P&O Cruises’ contact center on 0344 338 8003 (local charges apply).
Getting Wi-Fi on board
Buying a WiFi package is easy once you’re on board your P&O Cruises ship. Just open the Vacation planner and switch to wifi.
Alternatively, you can connect to free guest wifi, go internet.pocruises.com and follow the instructions on the screen.
You will see all wifi options with prices. Just tap on the one you want and it will be sent to your onboard account.
The Wi-Fi package is shared
One important thing to know about P&O wifi is that you can use it on multiple devices as long as you don’t connect both devices at the same time. So if there are two of you, you can just buy one wifi package and take turns using it.
However, this means that you won’t be able to use WiFi to send messages to each other while on board. But it can save quite a bit of money.
If you try to sign in when the other person is already signed in, you can tap the button to remove them from WiFi so you can use them.
Wifi for medical devices
If you need internet for medical reasons, such as a continuous glucose monitoring device for diabetes, you can get it for free on P&O Cruises. Ask at the aircraft reception for a free internet voucher.
But what if you don’t have a smartphone?
Most P&O Cruises ships have a library with public computers that you can use to access the internet if you don’t have a working smartphone or tablet. These are open 24 hours a day. However, the newer ships Arvia and Iona do not have public computers.
If you need something printed, you can do it at the library for 30p per sheet. A scanning service is also available at Guest Services.
Is P&O Cruises wifi worth it?
Wi-Fi at sea is never as fast as the Wi-Fi you use at home. The speed you get depends on where you are on the ship and how many people are using the WiFi at the same time.
There are always WiFi black spots on cruise ships, so visit a public lounge for your best chance of getting a good signal.
Personally, I don’t think it’s worth buying wifi for your entire trip. There are more fun things to do on a cruise ship than looking at your phone! However, if you really need to stay connected during sea days, then purchasing P&O Cruises’ wifi package in 24-hour blocks is a good option.
