Spider-Man will star in the upcoming animated series Spider-Man: Freshman Year, but what will the show’s premise, cast, and continuity setting be?
Spider-Man: Freshman Year will be the latest animated series for Marvel’s iconic web-slinger, Peter Parker. Appearing to take inspiration from numbers spider man adaptations, Freshman Year was initially believed to be part of the main MCU timeline, but 2022’s San Diego Comic-Con proves that this isn’t quite the case. Freshman Year will be a unique take on one of Marvel’s most famous superheroes, with surprising connections to the MCU.
Spider-Man is seen by many as Marvel’s flagship characters, with decades of comic books capturing the imaginations of readers and inspiring numerous adaptations to film and television. The Marvel Cinematic Universe introduced its own version of Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, in Captain America: Civil War, which only referenced the web-slinger’s iconic origin story in passing. For a time, it appeared that Freshman Year would finally explore this skipped portion of the MCU Spider-Man’s history.
Marvel Studios’ animation panel at 2022’s San Diego Comic-Con reveals numerous exciting details about Spider-Man: Freshman Year, including its premise, cast, and release date. Although heavily inspired by the MCU, Freshman Year will explore the life of a new version of Peter Parker, though those familiar with Tom Holland’s iteration will see many parallels between the two web-slingers. Freshman Year’s continuity setting will grant it the creative freedom to utilize the entirety of the spider man mythos without contradicting the main MCU.
Spider-Man: Freshman Year Won’t Star Tom Holland
Although Tom Holland is slated to appear in more spider man films as the titular superhero, some may wonder if he’ll voice the web-slinger in Freshman Year. Tom Holland will reportedly not be voicing Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Freshman Year, though there are other spider man voice actors who could easily take his place. One possibility is Hudson Thames, who voices Spider-Man in Marvel’s What If…?
Who Else Is In Spider-Man: Freshman Year’s Cast?
While Tom Holland voicing Spider-Man in Freshman Year is seemingly debunked, the series has confirmed two other voice actors’ casting. Bentley Wittman, the classic Marvel villain known as the Wizard, will be voiced by Paul F. Tompkins. Reprising his role from the MCU’s Daredevil is Charlie Cox, who will voice Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, in the series.
Spider-Man: Freshman Year Story Details
Taking inspiration from the early Silver Age spider man comics and the many spider man screen adaptations, Freshman Year will explore the beginning of Peter Parker’s superhero career. Not only will the series have him face off against classic Spider-Man foes like Doctor Octopus and Chameleon, but it will also feature Norman Osborn taking on a mentor role for Peter Parker, just as Tony Stark did in the MCU. This cements Spider-Man: Freshman Year as being set in a different universe to the MCU, though it seemingly has many parallels to it, suggesting it could be similar to the alternate realities shown in What If…?
Spider-Man: Freshman Year Release Date
Freshman Year is still quite a long way away from releasing, though Marvel Studios has an encouraging announcement for the series. While it lacks a release window, the series has been confirmed for at least one additional season after its first. Spider-Man: Freshman Year will begin sometime in 2024, initiating a fresh new take on the beloved spider man characters before it continues with Spider-Man: Freshman Year season 2, Spider-Man: Sophmore Year.
