One does not simply thirst for Mordor. You’ve heard of the sexy Sauron Rings of power and how everyone sends it and … well … you will see. While other fandoms fight over whether it’s okay to like a villain, TROP fans are quietly falling in love with one of literature’s greatest villains. Spoilers for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power ahead, definitely for Season 1 and maybe for some future seasons.
Sauron’s heat is canon.
While the series condenses the canon and events of Middle-earth history presented in JRR Tolkien’s books, stories, and supplements, one thing we do know is this: Sauron was hot. That’s something even the most die-hard Tolkien fans can’t deny. In Tolkien’s biblical text Middle Earth The SilmarillionAt the beginning of the chapter entitled The Rings of Power and the Third Age, Tolkien says:
When Thangorodrim was broken and Morgoth overthrown, Sauron again assumed his fair complexion and worshiped Eönwe, herald of Manwen, and renounced all his evil deeds. And some believe that it was not a lie at first, but that he repented out of fear of Sauron.
(I know the chapter says the Third Age, but I believe the passage describes events in the Second Age.) Appendices The The Silmarillion Also note that the “Annatar” and rings of power that Sauron used when he was “Lord of the Gifts” took “fair form” when they were in production. Good looks are only temporary. When Numenor finally fell and Sauron created the One Ring, The Silmarillion notes:
In the middle of the land of Mordor [Sauron] He had made the Lord Ring. Now he pondered in the dark until he created a new form for himself; and it was terrible, for when he was thrown into the abyss at the drowning of Númenor, his good looks were gone forever.
The page-to-screen execution was still a surprise.
So we knew it would be easy in Sauron’s eyes Rings of Power and we knew he was going to be kind of charming. So he gained the trust of elves, dwarves and men and stabbed them all in the back with the proverbial One Ring. That said, I don’t know about you all, but I assumed that Annathar – or whatever she calls herself – would be one for Legolas’ girls, who are Elven-style hot. I didn’t expect him to be hot in a solid, unwashed, Aragorn way. Crack me up, I guess.
Halbrand was Sauron as we now know (read with me) played by Australian actor Charlie Vickers. Hey, boy. Handsome and sad and dark and smiling up a storm. Galadriel meets him on a raft at sea. After killing his brother in the service of Morgoth, the Big Bad before him, he is on a quest to find and defeat Sauron, and not only befriends him, but opens a path for his return. Wow!
Soon after they meet, Galadriel makes an expensive assumption, giving her and her fans a very compelling story about him: a reluctant hero and heir to the Southlands – an exiled king like Aragorn, right? Wrong! Halbrand would technically rule over the Southlands, but only because that area of Middle-earth would be Mordor. Still, Gal and the hero’s journey that unsuspecting audiences were sold on made us take a special look at Halbrand and what he did.
Sauron manipulates Galadriel, but is also at a crossroads.
One of Tolkien’s letters that inspired Vickers’ take on the character states, “When Morgoth was finally defeated by the Valar [Sauron] abandoned his allegiance; but from fear; he did not present himself to the Valar or sue for pardon and remained in Middle-earth. He was proud to see how greatly his knowledge was admired by all other rational creatures, and how easy it was to influence him.’
Technically, Rings of Power is not directly compatible The Silmarillion For legal reasons, these letters are actually important. Vickers also mentioned using Tolkien’s letters as inspiration in an SDCC interview with ScreenJunkies before the Big Sauron Reveal.
This passage hints at Sauron’s attempt at a normal life and perhaps some personal remorse before finally setting out to become not only Morgoth’s servant, but his second coming. This makes it complicated. And complex characters are many, many, many especially when the Dark Side tempts them.
Being smitten over a hot villain isn’t exactly a new concept.
Anakin Skywalker, Kylo Ren, Loki, Killmonger, Draco, Harley Quinn, the Darkling, the Goblin King, Regina Mills…need I go on? We know they are bad, but they are not real. We do not owe our allegiance to fictional heroes. They can’t see us. In fact, we can cheer for the hero while rooting for the villain. Fans are in the majority!
As long as you don’t insult others for not sharing your opinions or headlines, or start using fictional characters to justify your actions or the actions of your IRL abusers. Stories, especially fantasy and science fiction, help us work through our fears, anxieties, and dreams in a safe space.
He even survived the shower – I know it sounds wrong, but fans weren’t happy when Aragon was showered with oily water and blown away. The return of the king. Think Steve Rogers walks in End of the gamebut it was so bad that it made us root against basic hygiene.
We know he’s a villain, even though he doesn’t necessarily realize it.
If you were less familiar with the Hot Sauron concept before Rings of Powerit might make you look at Peter Jackson’s films in a whole new way.
What really pushes Halbrand aka Sauron’s thirst aside is sending him off with Galadriel. Rings of Power By Morfydd Clark. The two of them flirted in that intense but chaste way we’ve come to expect The Lord of the Rings, and she basically wanted him to be her Queen in the finale. He touched the arm. There was a view. Is it wrong? Absolutely. There are dozens of red flags. He is the once and future Dark Lord. He becomes the embodiment of evil. Galadriel is also married, although she believes herself to be a widow in Season 1. I ask you this: So????
We know for sure that this ‘ship is not the endgame.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun, appreciate their time, or go AU in the meantime. Galadriel can have fun too. Strong, confident, zealous, intelligent female characters like Galadriel Rings of Power they’re as boring as Entmoots unless they’re allowed to make mistakes. Bring “shipping manifestos, fiction, Tumblr posts, giveaways and lots of fancams” for Taylor Swift songs.
Let me be clear: this is how I want someone to look at me. I do no I want to be seduced by the Dark Lord and controlled by the One Ring he made behind my back and won’t even let me wear it in our engagement photos. I actually don’t I want To see Galadriel to become the Dark Elf Queen next to Sauron, but I want to see her think about it and struggle with her feelings and/or Halbrand. When Celeborn returns, I want him to be part of the love triangle. There is a difference!
Are you too pissed off to be drawn to Sauron by the inevitable flaming eyeball of it all? This is your advantage. To be honest, there are a lot of hot ones Rings of power. But I don’t think Hot Sauron is in competition with Hot Elrond, Gilgadaddy or ElenDILF. I love all of them. The more, the merrier! I’ll just be here with other dark and twisted devotees.
