Fujitsu and the Keio Research Institute at SFC today published a white paper on the concept of a Trusted Internet, which enables general-purpose verification of the authenticity of data on the Internet by adding a new layer called “Authentication.” “Layer” between the existing Internet layer and the application/web layer. The white paper contains the results of research conducted in the “Trusted Internet Architecture Laboratory”. (1).

Trusted Internet will allow users to confirm the validity of various previously difficult-to-verify data on the Internet based on additional information about data creation and processing, validation and evaluation data by third parties who have viewed the data, and information about the physical location associated with the data (sensor data, etc.). This allows users to judge the reliability of information from different perspectives, thereby preventing the use of unverified information and the dissemination of false and unverified information (“fake news”), whether intentional or otherwise.

Moving forward, Fujitsu and the Keio Research Institute at SFC will promote the development of new technologies in the Trusted Internet Architecture Lab with the goal of contributing to the realization of the Trusted Internet by FY 2028 by implementing an “Authentication Layer.” and browser functions to verify the authenticity of data from users’ devices.

Background

The deliberate dissemination of false or unverified information and data online is a growing threat to society, and according to some estimates, “fake news” costs the global economy at least $78 billion a year. (2).

Traditional methods of ensuring data authenticity include document approval management systems and data tracking systems such as baggage delivery tracking systems that use custom methods to record data traces.

However, verifying large volumes of data on the Internet remains a challenge, highlighting the need for a general-purpose method to prove data authenticity.

To address these issues, Fujitsu and the Keio Research Institute at SFC published a white paper outlining the concept of the “Trusted Internet” as a result of their research in the joint research base of the Trusted Internet Architecture Laboratory, which was established in April 2022.
