The internet is loving everything about Street Fighter 6 so far…except for its terrible box art

Capcom is absolutely killing it with pretty much all of the Street Fighter 6 content we’ve seen so far, and that includes a new trailer from last night’s Game Awards… except for one small but fairly important tidbit.

The game’s box art finally showed franchise newcomer Luke posing with a fist in the air. It’s all good, but the character’s scarred face has a big, open-mouthed grin and one closed eye, perhaps indicating that he’s fresh out of battle. Anyway, it doesn’t really look that great, and the fighting game community was quick to point that out.

As the last DLC addition to Street Fighter 5, Luke has only been around for a year so far. He seems to be too powerful in SF5, which leaves a bad taste in many people’s mouths, so he’s not the most charismatic figure on the list.

Sailor Man’s similarities to Popeye were quickly highlighted after his debut (he can power up in SF5, and this is visually indicated by the enlarged arms), and this new one-eyed pose only adds to the meme-ability.

If this alleged box art is the worst thing Street Fighter 6 has going for it (and it feels like it so far), it’s a really good look. Ever since we saw the first SF6 teaser, the clear attention to detail and efforts by the developers to fix past issues has been palpable, and the general conversation around the upcoming title has been overwhelmingly positive.

We did a quick search for “Street Fighter box art” on Twitter and came across a few similar reviews… (Be warned, there are definitely some. NSFW language used.)

There’s more to where this came from, but there’s some good news, as this is likely to be the game’s official box art. Yes, that’s what the game looks like on pre-order pages from Amazon to Steam, and yes, it has different versions with “Deluxe” and “Ultimate Edition” banners, but it’s only labeled as “base art.” Capcom press site.

We’ll be playing SF6 when it drops on June 2nd, 2023, even if this image is the most advanced visual that represents the game… but we wouldn’t doubt Capcom going another route, perhaps with the iconic franchise. Favorites like Ryu and Chun-Li?
